Fruitful Cooperation Between the Transportation Economics and Management Research Team and the Institute of Transportation Research (ITS) of the University of Leeds

In recent years, Pro.WANG Yacan from School of Economics and Management, Beijing Jiaotong University, has been committed to the frontier hot issues in the field of global urban transportation. It has carried out in-depth training and academic exchanges with the Institute of Transportation, University of Leeds (ITS). The cooperation has achieved fruitful results, which has significantly improved the international level of talent training and has produced a wide range of international academic influence.

    Professor Anthony May, academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, was hired as part-time professor of our school

In terms of talent training, the two sides jointly cultivate high-end international talents, establish an international academic exchange mechanism for graduate students, and carry out joint training programs for double doctoral and double master degrees. At the same time, Professor Anthony May and Professor Charisma Choudhury of ITS at the University of Leeds were hired as part-time professors of our school to provide academic and research guidance to the students of the School of Economics and Management, and maintain a long-term cooperative relationship with the team. In addition, Professor Anthony May has been hired as the chief scientist of our school's “111 Foreign Specialized Intelligence Project”, and will jointly carry out cooperative project research for more than 3 months with the research team every year.

In the field of scientific research, the project team has condensed more than ten research issues on urban transportation and transportation economy with ITS, and jointly carried out academic cooperation. There is also a special Seed Fund to fund cooperative research and exchange visits between the two parties. Meanwhile, the project "Urban Public Management and Service Innovation: New Urban Mobility Management and Policy" (UPASS), jointly tendered by the University of Leeds (ITS) in the United Kingdom, the Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the Transportation Economics and Management Research Team of Beijing Jiaotong University, was launched in 2019. The project was officially launched in March 2015. The project is centered on urban public management and governance, service innovation and policy, traffic modeling and optimization, and traffic behavior experiments. Through carrying out cooperative urban traffic modeling analysis and empirical research, it provides innovative ideas for the design of urban traffic services and policies, the design of new traffic experiments, and the development of new traffic models.

In November 2018, Anthony May gave a speech at the traffic planning and policy formulation seminar of the School of Economics and Management

In terms of academic exchanges, the two sides jointly carried out a number of academic exchanges and international academic conferences. In 2018, Pro.WANG Yacan and team members were invited to visit ITS and conducted extensive exchanges with more than a dozen professors of ITS about urban transportation and transportation economics. Associate Pro.XIAO Lingling of the team and Pro.LIU Ronghui of ITS have a long-term scientific research cooperation relationship, and the co-authored paper is published in Transport Science, the top journal of transportation research. Pro.WANG Yacan, Associate Pro.ZHOU Huiyu and Professor Charisma Choudhury, as guest editors, jointly organized the top transportation research series SSCI journal Transportation Research: Part F, Traffic Psychology and Behaviour special issue Emerging Issues in Sustainable Urban Transport: Behavioral Models and Experiments, which is currently soliciting papers from around the world.

In November 2018, Pro.Anthony May, Director toRichard Batley, Dr. Andrew Smith, Pro.Daniel Johnson, and Pro. Charisma Choudhury from the University of Leeds visited our school for academic exchanges and cooperation. In October 2018, at the 6th International Conference on "Transportation and Space-Time Economics" (TSTE 2018) held in our school, some internationally renowned scholars such as Anthony May and Simon Shepherd of the ITS at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom visited the conference and organized seminars with the team around traffic management issues. In October 2019, the 7th "Transportation and Space-Time Economic Forum" International Conference (TSTE 2019) will be held in our school. Professors from both sides will jointly organize a seminar New Governance Model and Strategy in Urban Transportation. Currently, ITS at the University of Leeds contributed nine articles to TSTE.
