During September 19-21, 2014, the 5th Sino-EU Workshop on Engineering Education was held in Xioan Jiaotong University. The joint application by our school and Universidad PolitȦcnica de Catalunña (UPC) for pLogistics, IT and Management and Service Science Doctoral Schoolq Program was officially approved by SEEEP.

 

On the morning of September 19, Wang Shuguo, president of Xioan Jiaotong University delivered a welcoming speech at the opening ceremony and Chen Yinghui, deputy director-general of International Cooperation and Exchange Department of Ministry of Education, Zhang Ning, Deputy Secretary-General of China Scholarship Council (CSC), JosȦSantos-Victor, Secretary-General of CLUSTER, MS. Alexandra Lehmann, a representative from EU gave their speeches at the ceremony, respectively introducing the postgraduate education and scholarship management of Sino-EU Engineering Education Cooperation, CSC Sponsored Program, SEEEP Development Survey and EU Framework Horizon 2020 Initiative. Later, 7 Sino-EU representatives were kindly invited to make the key-note speeches. Mr. Ning Bin, president of Beijing Jiaotong University delivered a speech entitled pCommunicating to share, innovating to developq, introducing the disciplinary features of our university and also expatiating on our universityos philosophy of engineering talent cultivation, model and the important role played by Sino-EU Education Cooperation in the talent education and cultivation.

 

On the morning of September 20, the participants listened attentively to the progress report of three SESE projects in the first batch and the application report for 7 new projects. Prof. Zhang Runtong, the Chinese director of ICIR and director of Information Management Department, Prof. Jose Sallan, Dean of Management School of Universidad PolitȦcnica de Catalunña(UPC), introduced the bilateral cooperation backgrounds, cooperation fields, cooperation plan, the intended Ph.D joint cultivation model and the pre-stage exchange and cooperation foundations for the mutual cooperation by both sides by relying on such academic journals as LISS International Conference and JIEM, etc. The conference announced the official approval of two new programs, including the program of our school. 

 

Currently, our school joined hands with UPC to initiate the special work for establishing pLogistics, IT and Management and Service Science Doctoral Schoolq with the Graduate School playing first fiddle, ICIR Team under the leadership of Prof. Zhang Zhenji and Polytechnic Business School of UPC respectively undertaking all specific tasks. Both sides have conducted the substantial cooperation in respect of the jointly cooperated program, the sponsoring of LISS International Conference, Ph.D joint education and cultivation and faculty exchange, etc.

 

Prior to the conference, President Ning Bin met Prof. Cesar Mosso, assistant to President of UPC, and Prof. Jose Sallan, Dean of Management School. Some teachers from our universityos International Exchange and Cooperation Department, Academic Affairs Office, Graduate School and the program application team also attended the conference.

 

Background 1: Sino-EU Engineering Education Platform- SEEEP

 

Sino-EU Engineering Education Platform –SEEEP, founded in September 2010, with its members composed of 12 universities, particularly including CLUSTER, and 18 Chinese universities delicately selected and identified by the Ministry of Education of the Peopleos Republic of China. In September 2012, SEEEP decided to launch Sino-EU Doctoral School for Sustainability Engineering – SESE, intended to initiate more than 10 programs to promote the cooperation research and the Ph.D education to enhance the education and scientific research cooperation capacities of both sides. In September 2013, at the 4th SEEEP Annual Conference, 4 SESE Programs in the first batch were officially approved.

 

SEEEP 12 universities in Europe include Royal Institute of Technology, Aalto University, École Polytechnique FȦdȦrale de Lausanne (EPFL), University Karlsruhe, Dames Dartmouth University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), Trinity College Dublin, UPC, Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG) and Politecnico di TORINO. 18 Chinese universities include Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Tianjin University, Tsinghua University, Xioan Jiaotong University, Dalian University of Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Southeast University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, South China University of Technology (SCUT), University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing Jiaotong University, China University of Petroleum, China University of Mining and Technology(CUMT), Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (BIPT), East China University of Science and Technology and Sichuan University.

 

Currently, the annual SEEEP Workshop has become a major channel to explore for the development and the cooperation model of Sino-EU Engineering Education, the key fields and the implementation solution. The Chinese side has set up pSino-EU Engineering Education Cooperation Scholarshipq through diversified channels, such as, the Chinese government scholarship, enterprise cooperation scholarship and university scholarship, etc., to provide more support to the joint education and cultivation of the Sino-EU Engineering Education talents; The European side will continue to integrate the resources of the European pCLUSTERq in a bid to win more supports from the governments and the European Commission and make the greater contribution to the Sino-EU humanistic exchange and cooperation.

 

Background 2: ICIR

 

The International Center for Informatics Research—ICIR represents an academic collective highly integrating the research team composed of Prof. Zhang Zhenji and Zhang Runtong, etc., with other professors from foreign universities like University of Reading, etc. In 2009, it was officially approved by Beijing Jiaotong University as a university-based academic research institution as well as the international research and teaching base highly featuring the mutual sharing of the cooperation resources, the talent joint education and cultivation and the cooperative scientific research. The cooperators of ICIR consist of more than 10 world-renowned universities, such as, UPC, University of Liverpool, University of California, Berkeley, etc., and Development Research Centre of the State Council (DRC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinhua News Agency and other domestic research institutions.
