From May 24 to May 31, 2023, Beijing Jiaotong University, in collaboration with Amsterdam Free University in the Netherlands, conducted a highly successful lecture series. Organized by the School of Economics and Management at Beijing Jiaotong University, and co-hosted by the School of Transportation Systems Science and Engineering, the series featured three special lectures. The virtual platform of Zoom facilitated renowned scholars from the Department of Space Economics at Amsterdam Free University to share cutting-edge research in the fields of economics and transportation. Furthermore, domestic and international experts in these fields engaged in insightful commentary and participated in face-to-face academic dialogues, fostering rich exchanges between Chinese and foreign scholars.

Opening Ceremony

 

The lecture series commenced on the evening of May 24, 2023, with Professor Wang Yacan from the School of Economics and Management at Beijing Jiaotong University presiding over the opening ceremony. Shang Xiaopu, Vice Dean of the School of Economics and Management, delivered a welcoming speech. Expressing sincere gratitude to the attendees, Shang Xiaopu highlighted the achievements of the School of Economics and Management and underscored the ongoing cooperation between Beijing Jiaotong University and Amsterdam Free University since 2017. Emphasizing the significance of the lecture series, Shang Xiaopu noted its potential to deepen cooperation in the realms of economics and transportation research.

Dr. Vincent A.C. van den Berg shares the latest research findings

 

The three special lectures, held on May 24, May 30, and May 31, respectively, featured Dr. Vincent A.C. van den Berg, Professor Menusch Khadjavi Pour, and Professor Jos van Ommeren from the Department of Space Economics at Amsterdam Free University. Dr. van den Berg's lecture explored the impacts of responsive and habitual congestion pricing policies on welfare under dynamic conditions. Professor Khadjavi Pour's presentation delved into how market exposure affects smallholders' competitive behavior, particularly in addressing the gender gap. Professor van Ommeren discussed the qualitative evidence of short-term rentals, specifically Airbnb, in Los Angeles and its implications on the housing market. The lectures showcased diverse research methods, cutting-edge designs, and novel data processing technologies, provoking intense discussions and stimulating critical thinking among the attendees.

Professor Menusch Khadjavi Pour shares the latest research findings

 

The three special lectures were moderated by Professor Wang Yacan, Associate Professor Zhou Huiyu, and Assistant Professor Shi Kunbo from the School of Economics and Management at Beijing Jiaotong University. Each session included precise comments and in-depth discussions with renowned scholars in the field, offering valuable insights and fostering academic dialogues. Notable commentators included Professor Kang Liujiang, Professor Wang Yacan, and Professor Li Hongchang from Beijing Jiaotong University. The discussions explored practical applications of theoretical models, experiences and precautions in field experimental design, and the policy implications of research findings. The series attracted active participation from teachers and students across multiple universities, fostering exchanges and contributing to the integration of economics and transportation disciplines.

Professor Jos van Ommeren shares the latest research findings

 

The 2023 lecture series served as an innovative channel for academic research in economics and transportation. It deepened international exchanges and cooperation, contributing to the mutual development of transportation disciplines between Beijing Jiaotong University and Amsterdam Free University. The success of the series solidified the foundation for intercollegiate cooperation and provided valuable assistance to ongoing international cooperation and training programs.
