At 2:10 p.m. June 19, 2014, Associate Professor Tang Xiang presented a lecture at Meeting Room 611 of East Siyuan Building to teachers and students of College of Economics of School of Economics and Management, focusing on the title "Chinaos Race-to-the-bottom Growth Model: Taking the truck overloading and road-toll as the study case". Tang Xiang is currently an associate professor of Department of International Economic and Trade of School of Economics, Peking University from which he graduated in 1999 with a BA in Economics. Soon afterward, he went to attend the program of Ph.D in economics from Economics Department of University of California-Los Angeles and obtained his Ph.D in economics in 2005 and went back to serve as a teacher in School of Economics of Peking University. His major research direction is involved with International Macroeconomics, International Trade Theory, Public Finance and Globalization Issues. He has published many research papers at many domestic and overseas outstanding journals, say, "Economic Research", "World Economy", Pacific Economic Review (SSCI Journal ) and Frontiers of Economics in China, etc.
The lecture was presided over by Prof. Bo Wei and Associate Professor Tang Xiang, first of all, discussed the Mechanism of Political Economy for Chinaos export-oriented development with a simple model and conducted the further in-depth analysis of the gradual transformation of Chinaos export-oriented development strategy, namely the "race-to-bottom growth model" considerably relying on the race-to-bottom model or by lowering the production supervision standard to maintain the cost advantage and the economic growth and also introduce the concept of "the race-to-bottom lease". If we can eliminate "the race-to-bottom growth", the higher macro-tax burden historically formed will greatly increase the actual exchange rate appreciation, thus rendering it impossible to maintain the export-oriented development. He took the truck overloading and the road toll as the study case to verify this point of view. Dr. Tangos lecture aroused the great interest from the teachers and students present at the lecture for the profound discussion and exchange about the theories and the study case referred to in the lecture, thus wining the warm welcome and good praises from the teachers and students.
