On July 31, pNational Excellent College Students Summer Campq sponsored by School of Economics and Management came to a close, which started from July 28 for 4 days as a major initiative for Beijing Jiaotong University to implement its Medium and Long-term Education Development Program, 2011 Plan and the selection and cultivation of innovative talents and the improvement of the quality of the postgraduates cultivated by this university.
At the opening ceremony for the summer camp on July 28, Prof. Guo Xuemeng, associate dean of Graduate School attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Xu Shoutao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Yuan Lunqu, a counselor of State Council, Prof. Rong Chaohe, a member of Discipline Review Group of the State Council Academic Degree Committee and a famous instructor at the national level, Shi Zhenjun, director of Enrollment and Employment Office, officers and leaders from School of Economics and Management, such as, Wen Yingchun, Cui Yongmei and Zhan Li were also present at the opening ceremony. Prof. Zhang Qiusheng, dean of School of Economics and Management, declared the summer camp open and also make a speech. The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Hao Shengyue, associate dean of School of Economics and Management.
Associate Dean Guo Xuemeng pointed out in the speech, the national excellent student summer camp sponsored by School of Economics and Management functions as the important step and the vital approach to select and cultivate the first-class innovative talents, which is of great importance to Beijing Jiaotong University to accelerate its building into the world-class university. Beijing Jiaotong University is a research-oriented university with the obvious industrial features. The most fundamental task is to cultivate the innovative talents, which represents the earnest implementation of the important contents of the National Innovation-driven Strategy advanced by 18th National Party Congress.
Dean Zhang Qiusheng remarked in his speech, School of Economics and Management is earnestly implementing the essentials of the 18th National Party Congress and the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Party Central Committee and the 2011 Program and the Pilot College Reform Plan of the Ministry of Education to effectively conduct the comprehensive pilot reform work by focusing on the improvement of the teaching and research quality and the cultivation of the innovative talents as the targets, take the international certification as the new opportunity, make the vigorous efforts to reform the independent selection and cultivation mechanism for the undergraduates and postgraduates, sponsor the national excellent college student summer camp, all of which represents one of the most important initiatives for the comprehensive reform to achieve the two purposes: firstly, to use the summer vacation to build a platform for the study exchange and friendly promotion so that the national excellent college students can not only learn from famous teachers but also make use of this platform to distinguish themselves and learn from their peers from other places; secondly, we can further enhance the quality for our candidates, particularly the excellent postgraduates to be selected nationwide through the summer camp.
150-odd excellent college students were delicately screened from more than 60 universities of National 211 Program for this summer camp which is one of the largest summer camps sponsored by the domestic universities in 2014, mainly involving such activities as the famous teacherso lectures and exchanges, student academic presentation, academic inspection and visit. Public lectures were given by famous teachers, such as, pBasic Role played by Spatio-Temporal Analysis in the Economic Researchq by Prof. Rong Chaohe, pTheory and Practice of Strategic Positioningq by Prof. Zhang Wensong, pChallenges to Low-carbon City and Green Transportationq by Prof. Liu Yisheng, totally 12 public lectures for different disciplines, so each camper could have a 10-minute chance for the academic presentation and exchange. In the end, 84 campers won the innovation capacity Verification Certificate.
At the closing ceremony of the summer camp, Prof. Feng Hua gave a summary radiant with warm feelings. Associate Dean Hao Shengyue accounted for the policy related to the innovation capacity verification and also put forward the ardent expectations to the campers. 3 student representatives from the summer camp shared with other participants their own harvests and experience for the activities, successively saying that this summer camp increased their awareness of the academic frontiers, promote the mutual understanding and friendship among campers, broadened their horizon in the hope that they could get admitted into Beijing Jiaotong University for further academic pursuit.
