Department of Economics

The Department of Economics is one of those departments that have a long history in Beijing Jiaotong University. Many outstanding economists have taught here, such as Ma Yinchu, Zhao Chuanyun, Su Jingzhi, Xu Qingbin, Fang Ju, Chen Jingyan, Song Shuxun and Yao Peiji. After more than a hundred years, from generation to generation, Transportation Economics of new China was born here, forming a national key discipline of industrial economics featuring transportation economics. Currently, there are 43 instructors in the Department of Economics, with 13 professors and 1 national prominent educator. They have conducted many projects belonging to the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Foundation as well as many other ministerial and provincial projects. Proposals and internal references composed by Rong Chaohe, Zhao Jian, Ou Guoli, Feng Hua and Li Menggang have been stressed and commented by national leaders and governments. Instructors have published papers on top-class journals, for example, Transportation Research, made speeches in significant international and domestic forums, addressed their academic opinions and accepted special interviews in CCTV as well as other medias at home and abroad, possessing a wide range of both academic and social influence.

For a long time, instructors in the Department of Economics have been attaching equal importance to both teaching and researching, bearing the responsibility of leading the development of economic society. Eventually, a stable research orientation has been formed in the areas of Transportation and Spatio-Temporal Economics, Sci-Tech Services and Emerging Industries, Industrial Organization and Security, International Trade, Economic Statistics of Quantitative Economics, Technical and Innovative Economics, Regional and Urban Economics, Energy and Environment Economics. There are many institutes in the Department of Economics, including Institute of Theories and Policies of Transportation Economics, Institute of Service Economics and Emerging Industry, Research Center of China Transportation Economics, Research Center of China Technical Economics and Center for Chinese Urbanization, which are assigned to construct two science and research platforms in Beijing, namely, Beijing Transportation Development Research Base and Beijing Research Base of Industrial Security and Development. They have also co-built Teaching and Practicing Base of Economics with China Communication and Transportation Association and held Transportation and Spatio-Temporal Economics Forum, Industrial Security and Development Forum, Innovative Industry Forum, with research orientations in Transportation and Spatio-Temporal Economics, Sci-Tech Services and Emerging Industry occupying a leading position nationally.

The Department of Economics has also set up bachelor¡¯s degree of Economics which was one of the first batch of national characteristic majors. Relying on the national key discipline of industrial economics, it has fostered high-quality professional talents of economics with bases on science and engineering and characteristics of transportation economics for transportation departments and institutes, industrial management and research institutes, state-owned and other enterprises, enjoying a good reputation. The pilot school stressed the integration of bachelor, master and doctors and the combination of science and teaching and began the exploration in tutorial system for bachelors as well as collegiate training system. Since 2013, 80% of undergraduates with the bachelor¡¯s degree of Economics have furthered their studies in graduate school both at home and abroad. The Department of Economics admits academic master¡¯s degree of Industrial Economics, International Trade, Economic Statistics, Technical Economics and Management and Master of Professional Studies in Applied Statistics. Applied Economics under first-level discipline provides doctor¡¯s degree of Industrial Organization, Structure and Security, Theory and Policy of Transportation Economics, Regional and Urban Resource Environment Research, Quantitative Economics and Technical Economics. With a hundred years¡¯ accumulation and talents cultivation, staff in the Department of Economics would continuously focus on scientific research and talent training, establishing the Department of Economics into the first-class economics base in China with an international reputation.
